Schedule Awards & Impairment Ratings

A Schedule Award is an OWCP benefit tied to permanent impairment of specified body parts or organs. The medical side of the claim depends on a supportable impairment evaluation, the applicable body-part schedule, and the evidence required by the federal system.

UNDERSTANDING THE MEDICAL SIDE

A Schedule Award Starts With Permanent Impairment

The award calculation and the medical impairment rating are related but different. The physician evaluates permanent impairment; OWCP applies its compensation framework to the accepted impairment and the scheduled body part.

Permanent Impairment

The medical evaluation addresses permanent loss of use or function and supports the percentage with the required examination findings and medical reasoning.

Maximum Medical Improvement

Schedule Award impairment evaluation generally concerns permanent impairment after the condition has reached a sufficiently stable medical state for the lasting loss to be assessed.

Scheduled Body Part

OWCP uses a fixed number of compensation weeks for specified body parts and organs. The impairment percentage is applied to that schedule.

THE IMPAIRMENT EVALUATION

The Percentage Needs a Medical Foundation.

The impairment report should make it possible to follow how the physician moved from the accepted medical condition and examination findings to the final percentage.

Ellis Clinic's broader evidence-first approach applies here as well: identify the accepted condition, establish the pertinent history and objective findings, perform the required examination, and explain the rating.

ESTIMATE THE COMPENSATION

Use the Ellis Clinic Schedule Award Calculator

The calculator uses your annual salary, the scheduled number of weeks for the selected body part, and the impairment percentage to estimate compensation at both OWCP compensation rates: 66⅔% without eligible dependents and 75% with eligible dependents.

1. Enter Annual Salary

Use the annual pay amount you want the estimate to be based on.

2. Select the Body Part

The calculator uses the corresponding number of scheduled weeks from the existing Ellis Clinic table.

3. Enter Impairment

The impairment percentage is applied to the scheduled weeks, then to the weekly compensation amount.
